Works and Workers of Iniquity

Works and Workers of Iniquity

Matthew 7:22-23

Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

The Apostle Paul, in his Pharisaical days of Christ-less religion had been dedicated, conscientious, devoted, a Hebrews of the Hebrews, and in his own mind, blameless as touching the law (Philippians 3:4-6). So much so that he persecuted Christ in His members (Acts 9:4; I Corinthians 12:27). But when Christ Jesus met Saul of Tarsus (later called Paul) on the road to Damascus; and opened his understanding to the Old Testament scriptures (Acts 24:32), particularly Exodus 20:17: thou shalt not covet, (Romans 7:7) Saul found that His religious exercises had been in vain, and not only in vain; but in defiance of God, then, in His own esteem he saw that he was a miserable, wretched, and condemned sinner; and, had never known God nor His law.  The Spirit of Christ instructed Saul that all his works of religion, were nothing but dung (Philippians 3:7-8), evil and dead works, proceeding from a spiritually dead heart, (Hebrews 6:1; 9:14) and that those works were fruit unto death (Romans 7:7), his own death, as well as others.

The Pharisees had compassed sea and land to make one proselyte, our Lord Jesus Christ said: “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him two fold more the child of hell than yourselves.” (Matthew 23:15) In this evil work of binding men’s conscience under a perversion of the law (Matthew 15:2-6) the Pharisees had bound their proselytes in misery, trying to obey a set of rules that had been fabricated by the Pharisees themselves. Bringing them into bondage under a perversion of an abrogated law (Romans 7:4), which had been abolished by the death of Christ (Ephesians 2:15; II Corinthians 3:13), who is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth, (Romans 10:4). The Pharisees had bound the conscience of men to a law of their own making, by perverting the law of God. Christ Jesus “said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! For ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.” (Luke 11:46) And it is written “Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we are able to bear?” (Acts 15:10)

These that bind the conscience of other men by their fabrications, show themselves to be the seed of the serpent, (Genesis 3:15; John 8:44) for their proselytes are made two fold more the children of hell than they themselves. This truth is demonstrated by the fact that, the proselytes are bound by the same perversions as they that bound them. And the fact that they are bound in these chains makes it evident that they are not the children of God, for, all the children of God the Lord Jesus liberates from all the holds of man made religion of whatever sort it may be. As it is written: “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:32)

Though the children of the covenant of God may be bound by traditions of men for some time yet those who were given to Christ before the foundation of the world will in time be delivered from the chains of men’s tradition. Those who are never delivered from the darkness of false religion are not the children of the covenant of God in Christ. The seed of the serpent (Genesis 3:15) will in this life, remain content in works religion, doing their best, but always unsure that it is well with their soul, for perfect peace is to be found only in the finished work of Christ. Though they may go by the name Christian, yet if they depend on something of themselves, whether it be their decision, choice, repentance, works of whatever sort, if they trust in their faith, all is to lose their soul: for, Christ Jesus alone is the Savior, anything that rivals Him as complete Savior (such things as the works, choices, or decisions of men) are of the darkness of this world. All the active graces of the Spirit of God, as, faith, repentance, a willingness to be saved in Jesus Christ who is God’s Salvation, a thirst for the water of life, hunger and thirst for righteousness in the sight of God, a will to seek after Christ, all and everything in salvation is the free gift of God in Christ; and these gifts are sealed to the children of the everlasting covenant by the blood of Jesus Christ (Hebrews 13:20; Matthew 26:28; Acts 20:28).

The Pharisaical spirit is still alive and well in our day, it is the spirit of antichrist, and it still works in the heart of men, binding the conscience of men, by prescribing things to be done by those who it seeks to bind. Spring revivals, tent crusades, motivational speakers telling men what they must do to be saved, invitations, and all such things are the inventions of men; and have no precedent in the scriptures. So called preachers tell men what they must do to be saved, so poor blind ignorant sinners, start out by doing something, it may be, praying to be saved in public, it may be joining a Bible study group, shaking the preachers hand, coming up front, all these are gimmicks that preachers use to get a profession of faith from one who is ignorant of the way of salvation. The poor baffled sinner goes away thinking he has to do something to stay saved, since, in his mind, he did something to “get saved” in the first place, also there are many things he cannot do, touch not, taste not, handle not, all the commandments of men, who know not the truth. As the Pharisees of old used a perversion of the law to bind the conscience men in that day: their present day counterparts use a perversion of the gospel to bind the conscience of men today. Satan does his greatest work from the pulpit by leading men to a false gospel, which is dependent upon something that men must do or produce, a choice they must make or their decision to follow Jesus, all this leads men to trust themselves, and their works rather than trusting in the finished work of Jesus Christ, who has reconciled God, (I Corinthians 5:18-19) finished the transgression, made an end of sins, and has brought in everlasting righteousness for those He came to save (Daniel 9:24; Matthew 1:21).

Young people are seduced by fear or the promise of great rewards in this world, and so make a profession of faith with no heart knowledge of God in Christ, and no true knowledge of the way of salvation. These young people are bound by the traditions of those who bind them, and they spend years in misery trying to fulfill what they think they have to do to be saved. This sort of Christ-less religious activity is work of iniquity, binding the consciences of men, and young people, under rules of men, and thinking they may lose their souls if they do not fulfill the traditions they have received.  And because there is no real inner working of the Spirit of God unto salvation in these who think they have done something that has led them to salvation, they think also, that they must continue to perform that which is prescribed by the religious leaders, but, they find that they cannot do all that is to be done, and so become discouraged, disillusioned, despondent, and finally give up. And their last state is worse than before they began, for now they are avid haters of religion, they become despisers of religion both true and false. Christ Jesus delivers His covenant people from this state of bondage by the gospel of peace, for Christ Jesus is our peace (Ephesians 2:14). He has made peace by the blood of His cross (Colossians 1:20). The chastisement of our peace was upon Him, and with His stripes we are healed (Isaiah 53:5).

It is the office of the preacher, to preach Jesus Christ and him crucified (II Corinthians 2:2). This was the way of the Apostles, and it is to be the way in every age, as it is written: Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.” (II Timothy 4:2). Preachers should not attempt to intrude into the office of the Holy Ghost, by invitations, offers, or other gimmicks to produce professions of faith from their hearers. Some have said that if invitations and offers are not given no one will do anything: that is exactly to the point! If men think they start by doing something, they will be convinced that their doing is the thing that brought salvation: and that is to miss Jesus Christ, and to rely on our own works. Christ Jesus has finished the work His Father gave Him to do. His work was to save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21) this work He has finished (John 17:4). The Father has approved of the finished work of Christ, and this is proved by the fact that the Father has said to His Son, Sit at my right hand until I make thine enemies thy foot stool (Psalm 110:1; Revelation 3:21). Now Christ Jesus has sent the Holy Ghost into the world to apprehend (Philippians 3:12) all the children of the covenant with the bonds of love and grace. It is the Spirit of God that gives life, through the preached word, (I Peter 1:23) and He accomplishes that by resurrection power, the almighty power of God (Ephesians 1:19).  It is the work of the Holy Ghost to convince of sin, of righteousness and of judgment, as our Lord Jesus Christ said: “And when he is come, he will reprove (that is convince, writer) the world (of his elect, writer) of sin, of righteousness and of judgment; of sin because they believe not on me, of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more, of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.” (John 16:8-11).

Preachers should encourage men to believe, but no preacher is able to give eternal life and faith to a spiritually dead sinner, no preacher is able to cause God to save a sinner, preachers are not the dispensers of faith. No preacher knows when the Spirit of God has given life to a dead sinner. Preachers should stick to their business of preaching the gospel, and leave the application of the gospel to the hearts of men to the Holy Ghost. It is feared that many who preach use whatever means they must to get professions of faith from men, women, and children. But the true preacher of the gospel has one mode of operation in his preaching, he consistently preaches Jesus Christ and Him crucified, he seeks the approval of God and not of men. The true preacher will not change the message to suit the congregation, but faithfully tells his hearers the truth of the gospel. He leaves the saving in the hands of the Holy Ghost, who saves whom He will.

Halted Between Two Opinions

Halted Between Two Opinions

I Kings 18:21

And Elijah came to all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? If the Lord be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the People answered him not a word.

Those who worship God must worship, “in spirit and in truth” our Lord Jesus said: “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.” (John 4:23). Some say: “we worship the God of our understanding”.  For unregenerate Israel of old, that god was a god of stone, or of wood: some graven or molten image or picture of something they called their god (Numbers 33:52). Those who worshipped such idols had an idea of who and what their god is in their mind, but that idea was not according to the revealed truth of God. They had a zeal for their god, “but not according to knowledge.” (Romans 10:2). God has revealed Himself in the Holy Scriptures in order that men may worship Him in spirit and in truth, which is revealed to the heart of His elect through the scriptures; and that revelation is by the preaching of the “gospel of God” as the Holy Spirit opens the heart of the elect to the gospel. (Romans 1:1; Acts 16:14).

The great majority of modern men, now, worship another Jesus (II Corinthians 11:4) who is different in many ways from Jesus who is revealed in the Holy Scriptures; for, the modern, popular Jesus is one who has to look through a telescope of time to, elect, that is, to choose his people, according to the actions of men. So that salvation by this Jesus is not according to the sovereign will of God, but according to the works of men as foreseen, for under that modern popular gospel of another Jesus, men are saved according to their foreseen good works of faith: which shows that this popular Jesus is a fraud, for, the Jesus who has revealed Himself in the scriptures is Lord and Christ, as it is written: “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, The God has made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. (Acts 2:36). The authentic Lord and Savior Jesus Christ came to do the will of His Father, and not to follow the will of and worms of the earth (Isaiah 41:14) in dispensing His great salvation. This generation of religious men and women have rejected the Christ of Holy Scripture, preferring rather one who is not Lord nor Christ: not Lord because he does not according to his will, but waits to find the will of man, not Christ because a fraud is not the anointed of the LORD. In these actions this generation crucifies, to themselves, the Lord of glory afresh, (I Corinthians 2:8; Hebrews 6:6) they willfully sin against the revealed word of truth (Hebrews 10:26) to these who reject the revealed Lord and Christ of the Holy Scriptures, “there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.” (Hebrews 10:26-27).

Men and women who seek to worship God through a false gospel, and a counterfeit Christ: stand in great danger of “everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord.” (II Thessalonians 1:9). The Christ of the scriptures cannot be the Christ who is trying to save everybody, and has failed in that attempt: and at the same time, the Christ who came to “save His people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21) and has been and will be, perfectly successful. Is the Jesus you serve Lord? Or is he Lord, if, men will allow him to be Lord? Were this question not so relevant to our day of apostasy, the enormity of its absurdity would be acknowledged.

Reader who is your God? Do not be deceived, the Christ who wants to save all men, is not the authentic Jesus Christ of the scriptures. The Lord Jesus Christ who is coming again in “power and great glory” (Matthew 24:30; Luke 21:27) that is, the Lord Jesus Christ that is coming again: “when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:” (II Thessalonians 1:8-9), The same Jesus who was nailed to a tree, who is despised and rejected of men, is the Jesus who is coming again.  Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is not the Jesus who loves all men, and wants to save all men. The authentic Lord Jesus Christ loves only those given him of the Father (John 17:2). The Christ of the scriptures does not love the seed of the serpent (Genesis 3:15), to some of whom the Lord Jesus said “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do.” (John 8:44). To the Jews (John10:24) the Lord Jesus said “But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:” (John 10:26-27). The authentic Lord Jesus Christ said “He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.” (John 12:48). Those who reject the authentic Lord Jesus Christ, are those who receive not his word.

Those who receive not His word are those who will not believe the truth of the gospel, as touching the operations of the three Persons of the Godhead. That truth is: that God the Father chose a people before the world was made to eternal salvation in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:4-7; II Thessalonians 2:13), not according to their works but according to His own purpose and grace (II Timothy 1:9), Not because of foreseen faith and good works; but according to the good pleasure of His goodness (II Thessalonians 1:11), which He purposed in Himself (Ephesians 1:9), with nothing outside of Himself influencing Him in the least manner or degree.

Secondly: the truth of the gospel is that Jesus Christ saved (perfected) His people by one offering, and that offering, was only once offered (Hebrews 10:14). Christ Jesus purged the sins of His people by Himself, and sat down at the right hand of the Divine Majesty on high in perfect ease, “the immutable stability of His state and condition,” (Dr. John Owen) being witnessed by His sitting at the right hand of God (Hebrews 1:3). Christ Jesus put away sin by baring the sins of His people in His own body on the tree (I Peter 2:24), by the sacrifice of himself (Hebrews 9:26) “for the transgression of my people was he stricken” said Jehovah (Isaiah 53:8), he shall see his seed, for whom his soul was made an offering for sin (Isaiah 53:10), Jehovah said he shall justify many for he shall bear their iniquities (Isaiah 53:11), the people of God are justified by the blood of Christ (Romans 5:9) not by their tears, prayers, or an act of their will. Call his name Jesus for he shall save his people from their sins (Matthew 1;21). Our Lord Jesus Christ shall give eternal life to as many as the Father has given Him (John 17:2) all whom the Son has justified by His blood shall believe, being ordained to eternal life (Acts 13:48). The repentance, faith, and godly sorrow, of the elect are all gifts of the covenant, and are for the children of the covenant. All spiritual blessings as are given to the children of the covenant; such as, repentance, faith, godly sorrow, unalterable justification, perfect sanctification, an hearing ear, a seeing eye, and an understanding heart all these are the free gifts of the covenant, and are provided by the blood of Christ, for that blood is the seal of the everlasting covenant of grace, the New Testament (Hebrews 13:20; Matthew 26:28). Christ Jesus saved His people from their sins by Himself, without their help, cooperation, or any act of their will which was not the fruit and immediate result of His blood shedding and intersession, for a priest intercedes or those for whom He has sacrificed, therefore Christ Jesus intercedes for and sends the Holy Ghost to all those who He has purchased by His blood, the Holy Ghost makes them willing on the day of His power by the birth from above, for, that which is born of the Spirit is spirit  (Hebrews 7:25).

Thirdly: The Holy Ghost sanctifies the elected and redeemed sinners, by His Holy Calling. That is the Holy Ghost imparts new life (I John 5:11; Colossians 3:4) and with the new life a new heart which has the law of God written on it. This is the sanctification of the Spirit (I Peter 1:2; II Thessalonians 2:13) it is with almighty power, resurrection power, (Ephesians 1:19) for it is a call from death to life (Ephesians 2:1). The eternally chosen, and redeemed sinner is the passive recipient of the powerful operations of the Holy Ghost upon his soul, once spiritually dead, but after the new birth, it is alive, to live unto God. A spiritually dead sinner cannot give himself life, cannot create himself, cannot do anything for himself, he is a helpless, hopeless, dead sinner, and unless God has had mercy on him from everlasting he will perish to all eternity in the everlasting burnings (Isaiah 33:14). Many today have a “want to be savior,” priest, and king. This one wants to be the savior of the world, but men of the world will not allow him to save them. Will this “want to be” savior ever save anyone? The answer is no, for, this is a fraud, the god of the imaginations and understanding of men, and not the Christ of Holy Scripture. God the Father sent His Son into this world to save His people from their sins, and the Christ of the scriptures came for that purpose, “He shall not fail” (Isaiah 42:4); but, the Christ of the imaginations of men of free-will, works religion will save no one.

Again I ask, reader, who is your God? The Christ of the scriptures will judge you at the last day (John 5:22), do you know Him as He is revealed in the scriptures, or do you only know the god of your understanding? Is your God Sovereign Lord, or does your god want to be Lord? Has your God predestinated His elect to salvation?  Or does your god have to wait to see whether anyone will let him save? Some say their god is sovereign but he will not exercise his sovereignty, well then, he is not sovereign, for he will not exercise his sovereignty, but waits for men to decide all matters; but if that is the case no one will be saved, for “There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God” (Romans 3:11).

Righteousness Without Works

Righteousness Without Works

Romans 4:6

Even as David describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,

The righteousness of the saints of God is a perfect righteousness, not of their own making, not according to their own performances, not of them in any manner or degree. But, their righteousness is Jesus Christ, who is Himself  “THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS” (Jeremiah 23:6) it is the saints of God who make up the true church of God, and it is she; who takes the name of her Husband “The Lord our righteousness” (Jeremiah 33:16).  It was prophesied of the Lord Jesus that when He came “a righteous Branch” (Jeremiah 23:5) He would “bring in everlasting righteousness” (Daniel 9:24). The everlasting righteousness, which Messiah brought in was “not for Himself” (Daniel 9:26) but, it is for all the covenant children of God: the righteousness thus brought in is the fulfillment of the covenant of the law of God,
in order that peace should reign through righteousness because the law and justice of God have been satisfied by the blood and righteousness of Jesus Christ: as it is written: “God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them;” (II Corinthians 5:19) “And for this cause he is (Christ Jesus is, writer) the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.” (Hebrews 9:15).

The righteousness of the saints of God is the righteousness prepared for them by Jesus Christ, through His perfect satisfaction of the law and justice of God and put upon them by God Himself through His accounting the saints one with Christ Jesus in all He did as the covenant of the people (Isaiah 42:6). The righteousness of saints is received by faith; not wrought by faith but received by faith. The righteousness of the saints was wrought by God Himself, in the person of Jesus Christ, therefore it is perfect, and the justifying vesture in the day of judgment (Matthew 22:1-14). The righteousness of the saints is the “righteousness of God” (Romans 1:16-17; 3:25) revealed by the Spirit of God, through the preaching of the gospel, (Romans 10:13-17) and it is “unto all and upon all them that believe” (Romans 3:22). The righteousness of God is “unto all” that is, Jesus Christ is set forth a propitiation (satisfaction to the law and justice of God, Writer) for all who believe Him (Romans 3:25), and it is “upon all” the righteousness of God is the only adequate covering, the only justifying righteousness, that will be accepted in the great day of judgment. Christ Jesus is the judge (John 5:22) and the God is “the justifier of Him that believeth in Jesus” (Romans 3:26).  As said Isaiah the prophet: speaking in the room of the people of God “I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with jewels.” (Isaiah 61:10) And again Isaiah “Surely, shall one say, in the Lord have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed. In the Lord shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.” (Isaiah 45:24-25). In the Revelation of Jesus Christ it is written: “And a voice came out of the throne, saying, Praise our God, all ye his servants, and ye that fear him, both small and great. And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.” (Revelation 19:5-8). The righteousness of the saints; is seated at the right hand of God, His Name is the Word of God, Jesus of Nazareth, God manifest in the flesh, and all the children of God are “made the righteousness of God in him” (II Corinthians 5:21). Therefore the saints of God: “ worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.” (Philippians 3:3) For our justifying righteousness is completely outside of ourselves.
