Jesus Christ - Son of David - Son of Abraham

Jesus Christ

Son of David - Son of Abraham

 Matthew 1:1

“The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.”

One might ask, why is it important, to the sons of men that Jesus Christ is the Son of David and the Son of Abraham? Some might think it more important to declare that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, as the Apostle John did: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1). Certainly, both means of introducing of the gospel are correct, for both were inspired by God the Holy Ghost.

No doubt there are many reasons for the various introductions of the Good News: among these, it is necessary to show the relationship that Jesus Christ bears to both, David and Abraham, because it is written: “Now to Abraham, and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, (And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.” (Galatians 3:16). “And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. (Galatians 3:8). In this verse it should be understood that the scripture preaching, is God preaching, for: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:” (II Timothy 3:16). Therefore the first Preacher of the Good News that God would justify the heathen (all nations: writer) was God Himself; and that justification of life would be through faith (Acts 13:39); not through faith as the cause of justification; but through faith as the instrument of understanding and receiving the knowledge of justification through the blood and righteousness of Jesus Christ, by which alone the children of God are justified. Believers do not believe in order to be saved; but believers, believe because God has saved them; and “Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,” (Romans 4:16).

The promise of God is His unconditional covenant of grace (Ephesians 2:12), alluded to by the Apostle Paul in His epistle to Titus: “Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness; In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me according to the commandment of God our Saviour; (Titus 1:1-3). From the earliest times, of the recorded word of God, all the nations of the earth were to be blessed in the seed of Abraham: see Genesis 12:3; 17:7; 18:18; 22:18; 26:4; 28:14; and always keep this truth in mind: “Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.” (Romans 9:6-8). “For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.” (Galatians 3:18).

God also made Promise to David, saying, “Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house. And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men: But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever. According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.” (II Samuel 7:11-17). In this covenant of promise (Ephesians 2:12) God promised the seed of David an everlasting kingdom in verses Thirteen and Sixteen, and that sin would not make null and void the promise in verses Fourteen and Fifteen. It is to be recognized that this eternal kingdom and non-imputation of sin here promised is made not to Solomon but to Jesus Christ the Greater Son of David. (Hebrews 7:9-10). And again we find the promise in Psalm Eighty-nine: “I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, Thy seed will I establish for ever, and build up thy throne to all generations. Selah.” (Psalm 89:3-4). The promises are made to the seed of Abraham, who is also the seed of David. The covenant is made with Jesus Christ and all His seed that is in Him from everlasting. For, consider the following: “And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David? For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool. David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? (Mark 12:35-37). Jesus Christ is the Word made flesh, He is the God-Man Mediator, the Prophet, Great High Priest, and King, of the kingdom and house of God; and He is David’s God and by His Godhead, and David’s Son in His humanity, for the Apostle Paul saith of Him: “Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God, (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,) Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh; And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:” (Romans 1:3-4).

The blessedness of the sons of men is found in the covenant promises of God, which is sealed to them by the blood of Jesus Christ. Our Lord Jesus Christ made the covenant effectual to all the children of the covenant by His blood shedding and death. Christ Jesus is the propitiation (satisfaction, writer) for all the children of the covenant, Christ Jesus satisfied the law and justice of God concerning the sins of the many sons who were given Him of the Father before the world began (I John 2:2; John 17:2) these chosen ones are of “all families of the earth” (Genesis 12:3) they are of “all the nations of the earth” (Genesis 22:18). God promised Abraham: “in thy seed shall all nations of the earth be blessed” (Genesis 26:4); and again God promised Abraham: “in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.” (Genesis 28:14). The children of promise, for such they are, who are believers on Jesus Christ (Galatians 4:28): are the whole world of God’s elect, who are of God, while another “whole world lieth in wickedness.” (I John5:19).

Our Lord Jesus said, “For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” (Matthew 26:28). Again He said “Even the Son of man, came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.” (Matthew 20:28). The many for whom Christ Jesus died are the many children of God from all families of the earth, they are they who are from all nations; as it is recorded in the Revelation of Jesus Christ:  “And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;” (Revelation 5:9). Notice reader: they are redeemed OUT OF every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation, not that Christ Jesus redeemed all men, for certainly He did not, but He redeemed all that the Father had given Him, in the everlasting covenant of grace. These are the “Israel of God”, (Galatians 6:16) who are chosen and redeemed FROM AMONG men, as it is written: “These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb. And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.” (Revelation 14:5). These persons, the true Israel of God, are selected of God from among men, not because of their works, or anything as foreseen in themselves, as faith or repentance; but merely, and only according to the goodness of God in His Sovereign Mercy, for in themselves they are sinners; but, they are sinners saved by grace in Christ; and they are without fault before the throne of God: (Revelation 14:5) “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:” (Romans 3:24).

To those who God allows to read these lines, what shall we say? for there are many who never hear and never have heard of Jesus Christ and the kingdom of God. There are also multitudes whom God has given over to hardness of their heart, and to judicial blindness, “because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: that they all might be damned who believe not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” (II Thessalonians 2:10-12). What then, shall we say? Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:” (Isaiah 55:6). But someone may say how shall we seek the Lord? Diligently seek Him. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33). Seek Him by prayer, pray that He will open your heart to the truth: seek Him in His word, read the Bible and pray for illumination, visit a church where the scriptures are preached faithfully, for many antichrists are present in this hour, (I John 2:18) and from those who do not preach the scriptures “turn away” (II Timothy 3:5). For Christ Jesus has redeemed the Israel of God, and at the appointed time He will send the Holy Spirit to such as are redeemed: the Spirit of God will put His fear in their heart that they shall not depart from the living God as it is written: “And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.” And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.” (Jeremiah 32:40). As it is written: “For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out. As a shepherd seeketh out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them upon the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country. I will feed them in a good pasture, and upon the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture shall they feed upon the mountains of Israel. I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, saith the Lord GOD.” (Ezekiel 34:11-15).   AJ Ison
